Worst option

9:00am Tuesday 23rd December 2008

Sir, Jacqueline Jones (Letters, December 10) is entirely right to remind us that the people of Oxfordshire are being denied a voice in a decision that will impact on many thousands of us for at least 25 years. It is not just the residents of Sutton Courtenay who will be at risk if Waste Recycling Group's proposal to build a £100m incinerator near their village is accepted by county planners.

Stop moaning

9:00am Tuesday 23rd December 2008

Sir, Every moaning Minnie who writes to your paper that “Abingdon is a dying town” is helping to bring about precisely that. Every gripe and drizzle about the traffic, or the town centre, or whatever, merely adds to the stock of negative publicity and does more damage.

TV show

9:00am Tuesday 23rd December 2008

Sir, If your readers tune in over Christmas expecting to see Wallingford on television, they will be disappointed.

Why did warning lights not flash?

9:00am Wednesday 17th December 2008

Sir, I find the letter from Tony de Vere, leader of Vale of White Horse District Council, about the loss of £1m invested in Landsbanki, of Iceland, extraordinarily complacent.

Stop digging

9:00am Wednesday 17th December 2008

Sir, What brazen cheek from councillor Tony de Vere, having accused the Tory national leader “of being unable to spot a financial crisis when it hits him square on the chin”, we now have three paragraphs of “it wasn’t my fault, guv”, as his party, under his leadership, is at present minus £1m due to his inability to spot a forthcoming financial crisis. Pot and black come to mind.

Cough up

9:00am Wednesday 17th December 2008

Sir, Re: ‘The ball is in the football club’s half’ (The Herald, December 10). This funding debate is rambling on, with the Vale of White Hrose District Council defending their actions. Last week’s letter from Mr Newark was to do with Wantage Concords ground, not, as councillor Patterson states, Wantage Football Club ground — therefore, quite irrelevant. Mr Patterson states again and again that funding via community grants is available and determined by the Vale’s area committees.

Big thank you

9:00am Wednesday 17th December 2008

Sir, I would like to say a big thank you to the people of Didcot for turning out to support our troops. As `I have said in the past, this was not about the rights and wrongs of our troops being in Iraq or Afghanistan, this was about showing our support for the wonderful job they do, and Didcot certainly did them proud.

Simple advice

9:00am Wednesday 17th December 2008

Sir, It is so sad to read of pedestrians being hit by vehicles on our roads, often resulting in loss of life or serious injury, while walking home after dark.

Did you know?

9:00am Wednesday 17th December 2008

Sir, How many residents of Ock Meadow, Abingdon, are aware that in the recent Queen's speech, the Government has quietly dropped the Flood Prevention Bill?

With sadness

9:00am Wednesday 17th December 2008

Sir, It is with sadness that I read about the death of great aunt W this week. She will be sadly missed. Her wake, however, was well attended, so well, in fact, that some had to queue outside. I can't help but think. though, that it’s a shame that more people didn't make the effort to visit whilst she was still alive. Woolworths 1909-2008 RIP.
